Dear Teachers!
My name is Amy Thiessen. I have been a yoga teacher in Calgary for 6 years mostly at the Bodhi Tree Yoga centre. I also have a business background and have been really interested in the growth of yoga in the city and building a stronger safer environment for both students and teachers
What I am finding as I talk to many new studios is that it is difficult for new teachers to find their grounding in teaching to multi level classes. This is particularly true when the the teachers are designing the series as they go.
My passion in teaching is to help new teachers find their voice in teaching while also building their skills in alignment, room set up, and student safety. Recognizing the common inconsistencies in yoga instruction I have developed a 4 module program for teachers in developing their teaching style, self practice, pose set up and sequencing; hopefully enabling them to to teach a clearer, more efficient yet personal yoga classes.
I have attached all the information for this program in this email. The first module begins March 17. If this is something you or your teachers may be interested in please let me know. I am happy to give a discount rate for a group as I strongly believe that professional development in this industry is important.
Thank you so much for your time. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Blessings

Module 1 - The seat of the teacher & “Foundations” March 17
In this module we will take a close look at the mutual respect that is required between teacher and student. By examining different lineages of yoga, along with our own personal experiences we find our starting point. We will address individual interests, goals, concerns, and intentions which will then be cultivated over the four modules.
Foundations will be the key focus of this class. Returning to basic poses we build the foundations for more advanced poses. Moving from the obvious to the more refined teachers will navigate cues by feeling them “Feel it to teach it.” When we understand movement within our own practice our teaching is empowered and becomes more relatable and accessible to the students.
Module 2 - Building a Pose April 14
Module 2 is focused on building various poses in a systematic manner. To create the optimal expression of a pose for all body types cues move from the obvious to more refined. It may be best to use variations to build a pose and is often incredibly helpful to use props. By examining how to build a pose we see how we can enhance the pose and how to take the individual deeper into expression. Using active language, personal language, effective demos, and linking cues the pose reveals itself through the practitioner.
“Building a pose” will also include different pose variations and how to approach the student. When do we adjust a student? How can we build a pose in a way that meets the student’s unique needs, especially in large classes?
Module 3 - Sequencing May 5
In this module we will take the previous two modules and bring them together for creating/ using effective sequences. Poses are like keys, certain keys will open us into other poses. The main focus here is to understand how to use poses, taking the practitioner deeper in a safe manner. Poses can be worked with in a systematic approach to open different areas of the body.
By systematically opening the body through progressive asana a student can be lead into a more challenging series or pose safely. Crux poses and sequences may be very liberating for a practitioner especially when the ground work is laid out for their success. The progressive development both enhances the students abilities and gives large creative freedom to the teacher. There is an artfulness in teaching yoga that can be harnessed in this way.
Module 4 - Teaching a multi level class June 2
In this module we will take what we have learned and bring it together into teaching a multi level class. Reviewing previous experience teachers can be more creative; carrying ones own personality and gifts into the room while holding a safe space for students to emerge.
From creating a safe and efficient space in the room, to recognizing the journey of an individual class teachers work with a broader perspective that can enhance the experience for both themselves and the students.
The module will close by reflecting on what we have learned and how we can keep move forward. Each teacher grows at the rate they wish to grow. Growth includes, taking space to reflect, having discussion, personal practice and a multitude of other factors. All teachers nourish this growth in different ways. The intention is that at the end of this series each teacher will have begun to develop a support structure for their own development.
